Finding fish is a ever changing challenge. If you are like me you will want to mix new methods and old methods. The new methods means using technology and combined social media to get a overall experience picture of other anglers at different times of the day. Using older methods is using weather, know how and the farmers almanac to find proper tides or moons to figure out when the fish will be most active. This Article will focus more on older methods to help you land that next big fish.
In NJ you will often hear the term Old Salts or Old School Anglers. This is usually referring to Boat captains and anglers respectively that tends to use old methods. They are often times the only ones bringing home fish or braving wild oceans that will send most people running.
So what's so different between them and those that use newer fishing methods or technology? First the biggest difference is experience. The experience and good ole know how can make all the difference in the world. But another reason for many of their success is the fact that they use the weather and moon charts and tide charts effectively in their favor.
So let's start first with moon. You can easily go to the farmers almanac website and get all that information quick and easy, so quick and easy I posted it below. They even interpret the moon patterns with fish behavior for you so you don't even have to figure it all out.

Next is using the weather to your advantage. This isn't very difficult. First off the first hour of a light rain tends to increase fish feeding behavior so this tends to be the a great time to fish. But if the rain is too heavy it reduces their feeding behavior. Cold weather reduces their feeding behavior as does very hot days. Though there is many arguments over what's the best water temperature for fishing, I have always liked the water temperature to be mid 60s. That's when all my favorite species comes out to play. But if you want winter fish then this water temperature is not ideal. Here at www.njextfishing.com we include ideal temperature for each of the local NJ Fish species in our Fish Species menu option. The air temperature outside makes little or no difference to the fish, you have to go by water temperature which is all that truly affects the fish.
Finally we will talk about the tide. The tide can affect fishing just as much as the the other 2 subjects we talked about. Fishing at low tide or even high tide can produce less to no fish. There is little water movement when the tide is at high or low tides. The best time to fish is incoming or falling tides. I personally like an out going tide but a lot of anglers love the incoming tides in NJ.
We discussed 3 old school topics that should help you catch more fish. Try your best to meet 2 or all 3 of these conditions and the fish should be biting. Even if you only get 1 of these conditions you should be in very good shape. Use these tactics on your next fishing trip and we will see you out there!
