In attempt to monitor what is believed to be a increased population of Smooth Dogfish populations on the shores of NJ, we set out to gather as much info as we can year after year to determine if the population is increasing, decreasing or maintaining their numbers.
As of the end of 2017, the population does appear to be increasing

2016 and 2017 Smooth Dogfish Captures
When looking at this chart, there is not a major increase that would be a cause of alarm. But it does appear the population is increasing.
2016 and 2017 Sunset Beach Diversity
When looking at this chart, it does raise the question of diversity balance. It appears that both Smooth Dog Fish and Sting Rays are dominating the bottom feeding at this location. With so much bottom feeding being performed by both species, the game fish species are likely migrating to a location with fewer of both species.
As seen, the game fish populations are decreasing. The dogfish are bottom feeding and not attracted to the lures presented.
